Zoom Video Communications announced that Zoom Workplace, specifically Zoom Meetings, now offers post-quantum end-to-end encryption (E2EE) globally. There will two follow ups shortly after this – Zoom Rooms and Zoom Phones.

Zoom has joined the list of businesses who have declared they would begin utilizing (E2EE). Threat actors’ capacity to retain encrypted data that can be decoded at a later time as quantum computers improve makes post-quantum end-to-end encryption necessary.

Zoom’s post-quantum E2E encryption uses Kyber 768, an algorithm that is being standardized by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as the Module Lattice-based Key Encapsulation Mechanism, or ML-KEM, in FIPS 203, the company announced in a press release, to protect against “harvest now, decrypt later” attacks.

Apple stated earlier this year that it will be securing iMessages against potent quantum computers by implementing post-quantum end-to-end encryption.

Requirements for end-to-end encryption in conference rooms

When all attendees fulfill the required requirements, E2EE will be activated at a meeting once it has been enabled on the Zoom web portal.

Zoom desktop or mobile software version 6.0.10 or higher is required for all meeting participants to use post-quantum end-to-end encryption (PQ E2EE). It will be automatically employed in the conference if every participant satisfies the requirements for post-quantum end-to-end encryption. Standard end-to-end encryption will be utilized in place of this minimum version requirement if any meeting participants do not fulfill it.

E2EE, or standard end-to-end encryption

  • Enable end-to-end encryption on the Zoom desktop program for Windows, macOS, or Linux, as well as the Zoom web portal: worldwide minimum version of at least
  • Zoom mobile app on iOS or Android: Global minimum version or more
  • Zoom Rooms for Meeting Spaces: Global minimum version or more
  • The meeting will use PQ E2EE if every participant is using version 6.0.10 or higher.

End-to-end post-quantum encryption (PQ E2EE)

  • Permit end-to-end encryption to be used in the Zoom online portal.
  • Linux, macOS, or Windows desktop version of Zoom: 6.0.10 or later
  • Zoom mobile app: 6.0.10 or later for iOS and Android
