As per the most recent monthly report released by the Meta owned instant messaging application, WhatsApp, banned more than 19 lakh Indian accounts in May as a result of user complaints submitted through the platform’s channel for user complaints as well as through its own system for preventing and detecting violations.
The monthly report as per the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 has been released by Whatsapp for the month of May. According to the most recent report, the messaging app banned nearly 19 lakh Indian accounts in a month, mostly for breaching the rules and guidelines of the platform. The most recent report contains data for the time frame of May 1, 2022, through May 31, 2022.
In order to keep our users safe on our platform, we have constantly invested in Artificial Intelligence and other cutting-edge technologies, data scientists and experts, and processes throughout the years, the spokesman added.
In May 2022, there were 528 grievance complaints received and 24 accounts were “actioned.”
Out of the total reports received, 303 related to “ban appeal,” with the remaining reports falling under various categories like account support, product support, and safety.
As previously stated, WhatsApp typically bans those accounts which fail to abide by their rules and regulations. For instance, if a user is engaging in spreading fake information, forwarding an unconfirmed message to several contacts, and more, WhatsApp will block those accounts. The messaging app has put to action a number of measures to deal with similar incidents, including checking external connections and others. Additionally, Whatsapp incorporates a mechanism to mark those messages that are fake and have been forwarded multiple times.
WhatsApp also deploys and utilizes certain tools and resources to stop inappropriate conduct on the network. The company report also stated that- “We are particularly focused on prevention because we believe it is much better to stop harmful activity from happening in the first place than to detect it after harm has occurred. The abuse detection is said to operate at three stages of a Whatsapp account’s lifestyle: at registration, during messaging, and in response to negative feedback, which we receive in the form of user reports and blocks.”
A few speculations suggest that Whatsapp is working on an option that will allow users to revoke the ban accounts from within the app. Although there has been no confirmation over this news from the company’s end.
