Alessandro Paluzzi, a developer who often scrapes into app code to reveal unannounced features, tweeted this morning that Meta’s Twitter clone, Thread, has been placed into the Google Play store. However, it appears that this was a mistake since the app is no longer available. Paluzzi supplied images of some of the UI features, such as the login page, which allows users to check in using their Instagram accounts, and another screen that displays a list of their following profiles from the image and video site, allowing them to pick who to follow on Threads.

It’s hardly unexpected that Threads resembles Twitter. According to the screenshots, a new post will display character counts, as well as a small paperclip for attaching whatever it is that Threads will let you attach to posts. When browsing posts, there are recognisable symbols for liking, reposting, reacting to, and sharing them, as well as little circles for user photographs. Instagram’s blue checkmarks, a la Twitter, are also present.

Threads has been in the works at Meta since January as “Project 92.” The Verge confirmed the name and got a first look at the app during an internal companywide meeting where Meta chief product officer Chris Cox said, while previewing Threads, “We’ve been hearing from creators and prominent individuals who are interested in having a platform that is sanely run,” as opposed to Twitter.

That release acted as the fuel for the cage bout between Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter CEO Elon Musk, which may or may not take place. Musk responded to Cox’s comments by tweeting that he was “up for a cage match” if Zuckerberg agreed. The Zuck did, and now there is much conjecture regarding whether or not it will truly happen. Although Meta has not announced a confirmed launch date for the app, its appearance on the Google Play market suggests that one is on the way. Meta has been contacted for comment.
