Since the majority of iPads have always featured the slogan “your next computer is not a computer,” Apple has consistently promoted the iPad as a laptop substitute. However, despite the fact that the most recent iPads come equipped with Apple’s most advanced Apple M1 silicon, many users continue to choose the Macbook as their primary laptop because of one key distinction: the Macbooks run on macOS while the iPads run on iPadOS.
The situation could soon change, though, as recent reports claim that Apple is looking into ways to bring the macOS experience to its upcoming iPad models. According to Patently Apple, Apple has received a patent for an iPad experience that is similar to a detachable laptop and runs on a macOS-like operating system. To begin with, the iPad in the patent is a tablet with a hinged keyboard accessory (which does not resemble the Magic Keyboard) that enables the tablet to be effortlessly installed onto the keyboard via a unique coupling mechanism. Like the keyboard on a laptop, the keyboard also serves as a case to shield the iPad’s screen from the elements.
The software experience comes next; judging on the patent drawings, the iPad will have a macOS-like user interface to improve the keyboard experience. The issue is if this impacts one’s present iPad Operating System experience. It appears that the present iPadOS user interface is also accessible while the device is not mounted to the keyboard, in addition to the macOS-like user interface when the device is mounted to the keyboard.
The Apple Pencil is now able to be stored inside the hinge that attaches the iPad to the keyboard, which is another new element the patent shows. The hinge will also have a port connection interface like USB-C attached. The patent discloses that Apple is using a fairly peculiar strategy with regard to the camera, projectors, light, and microphone because these components are viewed as supplementary accessories that can be installed onto the hinge when necessary and removed when not.
Apple might soon begin with the evaluation and prototype phases of this innovation since the patents have been approved. And maybe within the next several years, the iPad and Macbook will finally come together for all the professionals who have to be constantly on the go.
