Elon Musk has almost ended the speculation as to when Tesla would come to India. The curiosity among Indians is centred on the much-awaited arrival of Tesla in the country. Few days back, Musk had tweeted in response to a question, he was asked on Twitter. Tesla might not make cars in India.
Elon Musk on Tesla’s coming to India
Elon Musk took to his twitter to clear the air. He wrote, “Tesla will not be coming to any location where they are not allowed to first sell and service cars.” The U.S. electric carmaker is seeking reduction in import duties to sell its cars in India. Elon Musk wants to understand Indian market first, and then move towards setting-up a manufacturing plant. Although Tesla cars are great, light, beautiful but that won’t persuade Indian Government to change their decision.
For the unversed, Tesla make their cars in the U.S.A. and China. Tesla has been encouraging the Government to standardize EV pricing and eliminate the social welfare levy.
Tussle between Indian Government and Elon Musk over Tesla manufacturing
There is an argument going on between Musk’s Tesla and Modi Government. Indian government has declared a hundred percent tax on imported vehicles over a certain price range. Along with other taxes, it totals to a taxation of even more than a hundred percent.
The Electric carmaker is continuously arguing that India should cut import duties on Tesla vehicles. Elon claims that their vehicles are eco-friendly so they should get support. Indian Government do not want cars to be built in other countries and sold in India. Thus, they have demanded to start manufacturing cars in India.
India’s road transport Minister Nitin Gadkari also stated that Tesla shouldn’t import cars from China for sale in India. He also explains that India has all the technologies and competency similar to other countries.
