Story Background
Sanjay Leela Bhansali was presented with the story or concept of this series by Moin Baig, almost 14 years ago. The word Heeramandi literally means diamond market. This beautiful and glamorous district in Lahore, Pakistan was named so by Maharaja Ranjit Singh who re-introduced the cultural practices of tawaifs. Going back to the history of Heeramandi , this area underwent a drastic downfall and lost it’s esteem under the rule of the British as they began developing brothel houses for their soldiers.
