Samsung has overtaken Apple as the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer in the first quarter of 2024, after briefly losing the top spot to Apple. Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series, which debuted in January 2024, helped the South Korean giant secure the lead by shipping over 60 million smartphones in Q1 2024. Although it is a slight dip from last year’s figures, it was still enough to take the top spot.
In contrast, Apple experienced a 9.6% drop in iPhone sales during Q1 2024, shipping 50.1 million units. This drop is attributed to challenges in the Chinese market. Meanwhile, other smartphone brands showed significant growth:
- Xiaomi came in third globally with sales of over 40.8 million smartphones in Q1 2024, a remarkable 33.8% improvement compared to the previous year.
- Transsion saw an 84.9% surge in sales, shipping 28.5 million units during the same period.
- OPPO secured its place with 25.2 million smartphones sold globally.
The global smartphone market saw a 7.8% rise in shipments during Q1 2024, indicating a recovery from the previous year’s challenging conditions. Despite facing US sanctions, Huawei made a strong comeback in China’s domestic market but remains outside the top five rankings.
Samsung’s strategic moves have paid off, and the company’s position appears stronger than ever. The smartphone landscape is dynamic, and consumers can expect more exciting developments in the coming quarters.
