Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced on Twitter that Tesla AI Day has been postponed to September 30. The rationale for this is that Optimus, Tesla’s ambitious humanoid robot, will have a functional prototype by then. The first humanoid robot was unveiled in August 2021 during the inaugural Tesla event. Musk stated that the ‘Tesla Bot” humanoid robot had the potential to significantly impact the automotive industry in the long run.
Optimus is a human-sized robot Musk foresees in performing daily activities like grocery shopping. Optimus will be roughly 173 cm (5ft’8) tall, weigh around 57 kilos, and have a carrying capacity of 20 kilograms, as per the presentation delivered during the 2021 AI event. It will be controlled by the same artificial intelligence technologies that Tesla is designing for use in its electric automobiles.
Musk stated that the robot will first be designed to perform easy and regular jobs, such as those seen in Tesla’s own manufacturing processes. Tesla intends for the robot to evolve and be capable of a broader range of jobs, making it suitable for both industrial and consumer uses. If the initiative is successful, it has the potential to have a significant economic benefit, which is why it is their major focus.
According to musk “physical work will be a choice.” “Tesla is arguably the world’s biggest robotics company. Our cars are basically semi-sentient robots on wheels,” it has the potential to be more substantial than the automobile company over time,” He also stated that Optimus is “intended to be friendly,” and that it is designed mechanically and physically in that aspect. The users can take advantage of the robot’s five-foot-eight-inch frames, its face will contain a digital display, and it will be able to carry up to 20 kg of goods at an eight-kilometre-per-hour walking pace.”
Musk has a practice of revealing products that are only prototypes, effectively selling an idea before it is implemented/achieved. However, his tweet that a prototype humanoid robot may be operational by the end of September sparked widespread curiosity, garnering almost 18,000 likes in a couple of minutes.
