According to an Axios story, Meta intends to withhold its future multimodal AI models, especially Llama, in the European Union since authorities have not been clear enough. AI apps for Meta and Ray-Ban smart glasses can be powered by multimodal models, which can also process audio and visual input.

In a response to the publication, the corporation affirmed their choice, stating, “We will release a multimodal Llama model over the coming months, but not in the EU due to the unpredictable nature of the European regulatory environment.”
The EU has specific concerns about how Meta and other AI businesses will use client data to train their models while adhering to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the EU’s data protection statute.
Additionally, Meta revealed that the EU will still see the release of Llama 3, their upcoming text-only model.
In early May, Meta announced that it would be using publicly accessible posts from European users on Facebook and Instagram to train its AI models. However, in response to objections from local data privacy officials, the corporation had to rapidly discontinue this.
Apple has taken a similar stance in response to the news that it will not be launching Apple Intelligence in Europe because of legal issues.
