In a ploy to reduce their reliance on competitor Samsung, Apple may soon be recruiting LG to supply them with OLED displays for their iPhones.
Anonymous sources told Bloomberg “LG Display Co. will initially supply between 2 million and 4 million units, small relative to Apple’s sales, as it continues to work on ramping up capacity,” The partnership will reportedly help Apple in price negotiations with Samsung as they had monopolized the production of producing OLED screens for Apple. The deal will also help speed up sourcing the displays.
The first batch of screens provided by LG will be used for a model of new iPhones slated for release this year, a source told Bloomberg. When asked about the reports, both LG and Apple declined to comment.
