Intel has announced a major rebranding for its processors for the first time in 15 years. According to the company, the new nomenclature is said to comply with the upcoming Meteor Lake (14th Gen Intel Core) processors’ manufacturing and architectural advances. Starting this year, Intel will also categorise its consumer products into two tiers to differentiate between mainstream and flagship offerings.
Intel is dropping the letter “i” from the client processors, starting with the Meteor Lake launching in the second half of 2023. Hence, the Intel Core i3 will be known as Intel Core 3, the Intel Core i5 will be known as Intel Core 5, and the Intel Core i7 will be known as Intel Core 7. Within the new series, there will also be the Intel Core Ultra 5, Intel Core Ultra 7, and the Intel Core Ultra 9 series of high-performance SKUs.
The company confirms that the upcoming Meteor Lake CPUs will be manufactured using Intel 4 process node and will make use of chipset design with 3D packaging technology to improve graphics performance and power efficiency. Additionally, Meteor Lake chips are also said to be the first set of client processors from Intel to feature a dedicated AI engine called Intel AI Boost.
Intel also states that the new brand names are better aligned with customer requests and also help simplify the portfolio. Intel processors launching on or after 2H 2023 will no longer have a generational message in their names. However, they will continue to have a generation callout in the processor number.
