Google has confirmed that the Wallet app is not yet launched in India. However, certain users can find the Google Wallet app from the Google Play Store and download it.
What is Google Wallet?
Google wallet is an app that lets users enjoy contactless payments with credit/ debit cards and digital pass storage. Payments can be done using cards by tokenising them and storing them securely. The actual number of the card is replaced with unique codes or to put it simply, a virtual card is created.
Google Wallet also serves as a digital wallet which can be used to store gift cards, event tickets, flight tickets, gym membership, other membership cards and more.
Is Google Wallet similar to Google Pay?
No, Google Wallet is a completely different app from Google Pay. Google Pay offers UPI services and payments, which is not supported by Google Wallet. Rather, this app is used for completing contactless payments using credit cards or debit cards. Besides this, Google Wallet only works on smartphones with NFC support (near field communication). According to a report by TechCrunch, Google will keep offering both the apps- Google Pay and Google Wallet in India. Both will cater to different sets of users.
How can you download the Google Wallet app?
Certain Android smartphone users can now download the Google Wallet app from the Google Play Store. They can then add their cards along with passes. The ones with eligible WearOS- powered smartwatches can also download the Google Wallet app on their smartwatch to help them make contactless payments with cards from their watch.
There is also an option for users to add passes automatically through their Gmail. You can also enable biometric verification for authenticating every payment.
Several users, before the official release, on X have reported that the Google Wallet app was functional even when sideloaded. Google Wallet functions in a similar way as that of the Samsung Wallet app that is available for Samsung users.
