Google’s Pixel 9 series, launched last month, introduced several AI-powered features exclusive to the lineup. However, recent reports suggest that Google might soon bring some of these advanced features to older Pixel models. Google is testing features like Reimagine and Auto Frame. These could potentially be available on the Pixel 8 and earlier models via the Google Photos app.
Google Pixel 9 AI Features
According to a report by Android Authority, in collaboration with tipster AssembleDebug, the tipster has found code strings. This is referencing the availability of Google Pixel 9’s exclusive features on previous Pixel models. They made these discoveries during an APK teardown of Google Photos for Android version 6.99. The strings specifically referenced features found in the Pixel 9 series.
The features in testing include Auto Frame and Reimagine. These two tools are part of Google’s Magic Editor. Auto Frame helps users create a better frame for already-captured photos using AI. It enhances image composition and suggests improvements, like a wider view. On the other hand, Reimagine uses generative AI to modify elements in an image. Users can prompt changes to skies, grass, trees, and other image details as per their liking.
While Google is testing these AI features on Pixel smartphones released between 2021 and 2023—including the Pixel 6, 7, and 8 series—there’s no indication of their availability on non-Pixel Android phones. This suggests that even if the features are introduced to older models, they will remain exclusive to Pixel handsets.
It’s worth noting that while APK teardowns can reveal features under development, not all of them make it to the final release. It remains unclear when or if these AI features will be officially rolled out for older Pixel models.
