Google has introduced a new device called the SoundPod that aims to make payment verification easier for small merchants in India. The device is a wireless speaker that is designed to work with the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) instant payment system. After a year-long trial, Google is planning to roll out the SoundPod to merchants across the country.
The SoundPod has an LCD screen and a single speaker, making it simple to use for merchants. It uses 4G connectivity and has three LED indicators to show battery, charging and connectivity status. The device has a straightforward menu, volume and power buttons, making it easy to navigate.
During the trial phase, merchants who used the SoundPod reported faster checkouts, which encouraged Google to proceed with the nationwide rollout. The company is aiming to compete with similar products from rival companies such as PhonePe and Paytm, offering a reliable and convenient solution for managing transactions.
Google is offering flexible subscription plans for the SoundPod, including a one-time fee followed by a monthly subscription or an annual subscription. Merchants who process a certain number of payments each month via QR codes will also receive cashback incentives, further incentivizing the adoption of this technology.
While Google has not given a specific timeline for the nationwide launch, merchants can expect to start using the innovative SoundPod device in their day-to-day operations soon. With the SoundPod, Google aims to revolutionize the payment experience for merchants, offering them a seamless and efficient solution for managing transactions.
