On Friday, Google’s suite of services—particularly “news” and “search”—saw severe outages. India looked to be among the nations where customers were impacted by the outage. The page’s headlines and most recent updates, however, are back up right now.

But Google’s search engine seemed to be operating as it should. Most of the disruptions, according to reports, happened after 4 pm IST. Users reported seeing error warnings and having trouble accessing important data.

When users attempted to access Google News, they were met with error messages stating that the service was not available. Trying the most recent changes on Google News yielded the following results: “Uh-oh! Something went awry. Kindly give it another go.”

Google processes around 99,000 search requests every second, for a daily total of 8.5 billion queries. Many people voiced their concerns about the issue on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. “Anybody Notice Google News and Discover Down,” posted a user on X.

As per the data gathered by the outage tracking website Downdetector, 1,232 users reported having trouble accessing Google services. Among these users, 70% reported issues with the website, 28% with Google search, and 4% with accessing ‘maps.’

Bug detection

The issue was later linked by the corporation to a “authentication system outage” that began at 7:32 a.m. ET and lasted for about 45 minutes. In a statement, Google stated that “all services are now restored.” “We sincerely apologize to all those impacted, and we will carry out a comprehensive follow-up investigation to guarantee that this issue won’t happen again.”

Wires beneath the sea

When internet companies were first starting up, product outages were somewhat prevalent. However, the occurrences have decreased in frequency as Google, Facebook, and other companies have grown bigger and established intricate global networks of interconnected data centers. In order to transfer data between continents and enhance performance in the unlikely case that issues arise in a particular area, Google has privately funded underwater cables.
