Google announced new enhancements to Chromebooks, Google Classroom, and Google Meet, with the goal of empowering instructors and students.
Google Meet is getting new capabilities aimed at enhancing connectedness, control, and efficiency in the classroom for those utilizing the Google Workspace for Education Plus or Teaching and Learning Upgrade. In a blog post, Shantanu Sinha, Director, Google for Education, said, “Now, Meet calls can be auto-transcribed directly into a Google Doc for easy lesson reviews and the ability to search for keywords and concepts,”
Users can now explore other tabs in Chrome while viewing four tiles of students in a Meet session, thanks to Google’s Picture in Picture in Meet feature. Teachers can now include polls and Q&A to Live-streams, as well as live-stream directly to YouTube, to keep the class interested and check for understanding on a frequent basis.
New features include the Screencast app, which is incorporated into Chrome OS M103 and allows users to record, clip, share, and view transcribed screencasts, as well as create a personalized library of movies that are automatically stored in Google Drive.
“We’re continually evolving our features to suit the demands of the classroom,” Sinha added. “From sharing devices to 1:1, to teachers using Chromebooks alongside students, we’re constantly evolving our features to meet the needs of the classroom.”
Cast moderator is a new mode coming to select Google TV devices that allows instructors and students to wirelessly broadcast their Chromebook screen to a classroom display with an access code that only those in the same classroom as the display can see. It is also releasing new integrations and tools to help instructors and students with their daily responsibilities.
“Practice sets lean into adaptive learning by giving students instant feedback on their answers and real-time support if they get stuck — providing automated insights for teachers to identify potential gaps in students’ understanding,” Sinha mentioned.
For Google Workspace for Education subscribers with Education Plus or Teaching and Learning Upgrade, practice sets are now available in beta globally and in English only.
