Google is reportedly testing a new feature for its Messages app on Android that will show the names of people not in your contacts. This feature will display these names directly in your notifications whenever you receive a message or call from an unknown number. The feature was first spotted in the beta version of Google Messages, which indicates that it is still in its testing phase.

Get to about profile discovery on Google Messages

During an APK teardown, Android Authority discovered this new feature. Their analysis frequently brings attention to upcoming changes in apps, especially in Google’s software. People are expecting the latest version of Google Messages to modify how notifications work, particularly for messages and calls from unknown numbers. Instead of just seeing a phone number, you’ll now see the person’s name. Make sure that you enabled certain settings.

To make use of this feature, you need to activate something called ‘Profile Discovery’. Without enabling this setting, the names of unknown contacts will not appear. To enable Profile Discovery, open the Google Messages app and tap on your profile picture located in the top-right corner of the screen. From there, select ‘Messages Settings’ and navigate to the ‘Advanced’ section. In this section, you will find the ‘Profile Discovery’ option. Tap on it and then turn on the toggle for ‘Profile Sharing’ to fully activate the feature.

However, it’s important to note that this feature is currently limited to those using the latest beta version of the app. Google has not provided an official release date for when this feature will be available worldwide. Nevertheless, the potential to quickly identify unknown contacts will likely appeal to a broad range of users. For now, the feature remains exclusive to beta testers, but many Android users are eagerly awaiting its broader release.
