According to Google, Google Play Store will now have a new badge that says “Government” for apps which are affiliated with government entities.
Google Play Store, the default app store for most Android devices, is now getting a new feature which will make identifying apps associated or published by the government easier. The tech giant states that this feature will enable users to identify whether the app that they are looking for is legitimate or not.
What is the significance of this new feature?
Several fake apps mimicking Government sponsored apps have ultimately found the way to the play store within the last few years. Google announces that it has worked with 14 different governments all across the globe to address this very issue. The Government of India is also included within the 14 different governments with which Google has worked for this feature. The tech giant states that this feature will enable users to identify whether the app that they are looking for is legitimate or not.
According to Google, currently there are more than 2000 apps in countries such as Germany, Canada, France ,Australia, Japan ,South Korea, Indonesia ,Brazil ,Mexico ,the United States, the United Kingdom and India that have the new badge saying “Government”.
As for India, the new badge is visible for apps such as Digilocker, NextGen, mAdhaar , mParivahan, Voter Helpline and more. When you click on an app name to see it’s description, you will be able to see the new government badge just below the name of the app. When you tap on it, a pop -up will open up showing a message that says “Play verified this app is affiliated with a government entity”.
Google claims that with this feature it will be easier for the users to recognise fake apps and avoid using them. This will in turn reduce situations where users end up sharing sensitive information with unethical apps.
