Newsrooms and social media are full of chatter about Twitter owner Elon Musk’s cage match challenge to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. While the development has attracted eyeballs globally, little is known about the reason behind why this happened.
The ‘foundation’ of this cage match was laid earlier this month when it was reported that one of Meta’s top executives gave a sneak peek to employees about Instagram’s Twitter competitor, at a company-wide meeting.
At the meeting, Meta chief product officer Chris Cox called the app “our response to Twitter”. He explained that the app will use Instagram’s account system to populate a user’s information.
Earlier this year, the company confirmed that the platform – which has an internal codename “Project 92,” and its public name could be Threads – will be a standalone decentralised social network for sharing text updates.
It was also reported that the company was looking at roping in public figures, including the Dalai Lama and Oprah Winfrey, about joining the platform at launch – which could be in the next few months.
Project 92 ‘comes’ to Twitter
The same information was shared by a Twitter user and Musk responded with a cheeky comment.
“I’m sure Earth can’t wait to be exclusively under Zuck’s thumb with no other options. At least it will be ‘sane’. Was worried there for a moment,” he said.
Another Twitter user then warned Musk saying that “he [Zuckerberg] does the jiu-jitsu now.” This was a reference to a set of photos shared by the Meta chief executive about 7 weeks ago on his Instagram handle.
Replying to this comment, Musk said that he was “up for a cage match”. Zuckerberg agreed in an Instagram story and Musk replied with the place [Las Vegas] the match would take place.
Both are ‘dead serious’, says UFC president
Meanwhile, a report said that UFC president Dana White confirmed that Musk and Zuckerberg are ‘dead serious’ about the prospect of squaring up against each other.
“…both guys are absolutely dead serious about this..they both said, ‘Yeah, we’ll do it.’ They both want to do it.”
