With Chat GPT taking over almost every other industry and seemingly mundane day-to-day chores, has it now set foot in integral parts of job recruiting? Chat GPT is becoming notoriously popular for how quickly and effectively it gets the job done. A few of the blatantly obvious reasons why one shouldn’t use Chat GPT to write their cover letter are: These cover letters lack personal information, and they usually copy the entirety of the job description for the company you’re applying to. These show the recruiter how laid-back and unenthusiastic one is about a job. It’s an obvious no-no for a plethora of reasons, which results in getting blacklisted by companies.
Quite recently, a woman who used AI to write her cover letter slipped up and didn’t cross-check. This cover letter lacked personal information & personal touch. A business owner, Mandy Tang, revealed how she had received such a letter on Tiktok. She went on to say how it had been barely five minutes since she posted a job opening and got an AI-generated auto response. Ironically, this was for a position as a part-time resume writer. Mandy also mentioned how, when she first received the cover letter, it looked perfect to her, to the point that she had almost hired the applicant. This was until she decided to dive deeper and reveal the harsh reality.
In her words, “The letter was really well formed, incredibly well written, and had literally everything I wanted. But then I looked a little closer and realized it was just a copy and paste of everything I had put into the job description.” Tang went ahead and mentioned how she included a part in the JD saying, “I have run a business for five years,” and the cover letter also said, “I have run a business for five years!”
Not editing and filtering out parts that didn’t apply to the applicant was a rookie mistake, as this AI did a word-to-word copy of the job description, which is hard to distinguish until you look hard enough. Even when Tang had a suspicion of how flawless the cover letter was, she couldn’t fathom the thought of a job seeker being nonchalant enough to use Chat GPT on a cover letter.
A simple Chat GPT run-through of her own JD by herself was enough proof! What threw Tang off was not the use of AI in the cover letter but rather how the applicant didn’t care enough to tailor the letter to make it seem more relevant and realistic. Needless to say, the applicant definitely didn’t get the job they applied for,
