The best lightweight laptops will be thin and portable while still packing a punch, at least enough to meet your basic needs. Because these laptops are frequently used by people who are constantly on the move, they are frequently designed to have a long battery life.
Still, ultrabooks and other lightweight laptops can be quite pricey, so we’ve made sure to include machines in a range of price ranges in our guide. Our top picks are primarily ultrabooks, which are laptops with an Intel Core i3, i5, or i7 processor, an SSD, and a thickness of up to 1.5cm. We couldn’t, however, leave out some of the lightweight non-ultrabook models that offer excellent computing power for their size.
XPS 13 from Dell
There’s a reason why the Dell XPS 13 is a popular choice among reviewers as the best lightweight laptop available. Given its lightweight nature, this ultrabook appears to defy the odds on many fronts, with 11th-generation Intel processors and up to 16GB of RAM. Higher configurations can even handle photo editing and 4K video editing tasks if you’re constantly on the go.
The Dell XPS 13 weighs only 1.27kg and comes with a beautifully designed keyboard, trackpad, and fingerprint reader. Additionally, it has a bright and beautiful touch screen, or you can choose the more expensive OLED screen version. You’ll be hard pressed to find a better all-around lightweight laptop anywhere else.
Surface Laptop Go 2 by Microsoft
The Surface Laptop Go 2, one of the lightest laptops on this list, is our pick for the best budget option. It even has a top configuration that costs less than £800.
The Surface Laptop Go 2 is a machine built for speed, and on test, it was fairly capable of handling basic tasks on creative software – which is about the level we’d expect from a lightweight laptop. What really holds it back is the low-resolution screen, which makes graphic design and detail-oriented video editing difficult and disappointing.
M2, 2022 MacBook Air
If you’re an Apple fan who wants an M2 chip but can’t quite stretch your budget to the MacBook Pro 13-inch, the MacBook Air M2 2022 will fit the bill.
Apple’s most portable laptop line is an obvious choice for this list. However, the 2022, M2 model is also one of our favourite lightweight laptops, weighing only 1.24kg. Furthermore, as far as lightweight laptops go, the most basic Apple MacBook Air configuration isn’t the most expensive out there, but you get a lot of bang for your buck in terms of design, power, and display versus some of the competition.
