The Apple Watch Series 8 is expected to make its entry with a bang this year. And there has been a lot of buzz around the features of this much-awaited product. According to the previous reports shared by Apple, the team shared a possibility that they might include a feature to monitor body temperature in this series. Mark Gurman from Bloomberg first addressed these rumours and suggested that the Watch series 8 might not bring the body temperature feature.
However, TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo posted a series of recent tweets where he claimed that Apple might, in fact, be working on an algorithm to support the temperature sensing feature in its upcoming launch. Furthermore, Kuo even explained why the body temperature feature did not end up on the Apple Watch Series 7. He commented that the algorithm did not qualify before entering the Engineering Validation Testing stage.

The challenge in implementing precise body temperature measurement is that skin temperature quickly varies depending on outside environments. A smartwatch can't support core temperature measurement in terms of hardware, so it needs an excellent algorithm to work together.

Kuo then added that Apple is planning to introduce the temperature measurement feature this year with their upcoming Series 8 model, if the algorithm is able to support the requirement. With this feature, the smartwatch will also act as a thermometer and can help in detecting fever.

Samsung is facing this challenge as well. Unlike previous media reports, I think Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 in 2H22 might not support the body temperature measurement due to algorithm limitations.

In his tweet, Kuo explained the primary issue that makes it difficult for smartwatches to include the body temperature sensing feature. He said that measuring the precise body temperature depends on outside environments and the hardware alone cannot support the smartwatch to calculate core temperature measurement. Hence, there is a requirement of an excellent algorithm.
According to Kuo’s opinion, Samsung is also facing a similar challenge which is making difficult for them to introduce this feature. He further contradicted the numerous suggesting that Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 will support body temperature measurement.
The Apple Watch Series 8 is expected to make an arrival mid-september this 2022 along with the iPhone 14 series.
