As part of its ambitious environmental vision for 2030, Apple today highlighted major advancements in its efforts to promote water conservation and spread clean energy globally. Water replenishment efforts in India and the implementation of renewable energy sources are two of the several new projects and collaborations that have been made public.

The main thrust of Apple’s presentation is that the company’s global operations and supply chain are now powered by over 18 gigawatts of clean electricity, which is more than quadruple what it was in 2020. Interestingly, 16.5 gigawatts of renewable power are now online in Apple’s supply chain thanks to the transformation of over 300 suppliers, or 95% of the company’s direct manufacturing outlay, to renewable energy sources for Apple production.

Apple Pledges

Apple has promised to replace every watt of electricity used for device charging by clean energy by 2030 in order to reduce emissions from users charging their gadgets.

Apple has formed a joint venture with CleanMax, a prominent renewable developer, to invest in a portfolio of six rooftop solar projects totaling 14.4 megawatts in India. The power requirements of Apple’s corporate offices, two retail locations, and other businesses around the nation will be partially met by this locally sourced renewable energy solution.

Another crucial area for Apple’s efforts to conserve water is India. Through an innovative program with Uptime Catalyst Facility, which supplied 23 million gallons of affordable, clean drinking water via over 300 community water kiosks, the company achieved 100% water replenishment in 2023 for its operations in the corporate field in India.

Apple aims for partnerships

Building on this, Apple announced additional long-term collaborations to restore freshwater resources in Telangana and Maharashtra, two highly stressed Indian states. These programs, which are funded in part by more than $8 million in additional project financing, are expected to restore rivers and aquifers and provide a total of 6.9 billion gallons of water benefits over a 20-year period.

Apple is addressing global water stress with a watershed-based strategy, starting replenishment projects in additional high-impact US areas like Northern and Southern California and the Colorado River Basin in Arizona. Over 12 billion gallons of freshwater were saved in the company’s supply chain last year alone thanks to the Supplier Clean Water Programme.

A global supply chain-wide output of 25.5 million megawatt-hours of clean electricity in 2023 was made possible by the tech giant’s renewable procurement practices, preventing nearly 18.5 million metric tons of carbon emissions. More than 1 gigawatt of new wind and solar projects have been made possible by significant green investments, such as Apple’s China Clean Energy Fund.

As one of the biggest computer firms in the world, Apple is putting strong environmental initiatives at the center of its business plan for the next ten years.

The company’s efforts to lessen its carbon impact were covered in detail during last year’s iPhone launch event. The company’s first carbon-neutral items were also introduced at the event.
