Apple renewed discussions with OpenAI for incorporating generative AI features in upcoming iPhone series and iOS 18.
According to the reports by Bloomberg News, Apple is reportedly discussing with OpenAI about using the generative AI technology of the startup. This is for powering certain new features which might be introduced in the iPhone later this year.
Both the companies, Apple and OpenAI has started discussing terms of a potential agreement and how OpenAI features can be incorporated into iOS 18, Apple’s next iPhone operating system.
However, OpenAI and Apple did not immediately respond to the requests of Reuters asking for their comments.
Bloomberg News also reported that last month Apple was also in talks with Google to license Google’s Gemini chatbot for taking features of the iPhone to the next level. A final decision has not been made by Apple on which of the two partners they are finally going to use. It will depend on whether Apple had successfully reached an agreement with both OpenAI and Alphabet Inc’s Google. Apple may also pick a provider completely different from all the reports and speculations, as stated by the report by Bloomberg News.
In comparison to Microsoft and Google, Apple has been slower in rolling out generative AI and incorporating them into the operating systems or devices which can recognise and process written text prompts and are capable of generating human- like responses. On the other hand, Apple’s competitors – Microsoft and Google have already started using generative AI to craft several new features and products.
According to Apple’s CEO Tim Cook’s statement made back in February, the tech giant was investing significantly in generative AI and gradually several plans regarding putting the AI technology into use will be revealed later this year.
