AMD introduces AI chips which are processors designed to run AI models and applications on the device directly.

On Tuesday, a new series of semiconductors have been introduced by Advanced Micro Devices for business laptops and desktops that are enabled by Artificial Intelligence. The chip designer aims to expand it’s share of the extremely profitable “AI PC” market.

When and where will the chips be available?

In a press release, AMD reported that the AI chips are expected to be available from the second quarter of 2024 and will be present in platforms from HP and Lenovo.

AMD and AI chips- more about it

The PCs which are AI-enabled can successfully run large- language models as well as apps which are powered by the technology directly on the device, instead of the cloud. According to AMD, the latest Ryzen PRO 8040 Series was built for mobile workstations and business laptops. On the other hand, AMD Ryzen PRO 8000 Series which was a desktop processor, was primarily built for the business users.

A possible recovery of the PC market has been predicted by experts because of the introduction of AI PCs. According to the experts, consumers are looking forward to upgrade their systems with new capabilities and features. Introduction of generative Artificial Intelligence technology has paved the way to an increased demand for advanced semiconductors which in turn can be used to develop and run complex AI programs.

AMD faces an intense competition in the market for AI PCs from AI chip front- runner Nvidia which has been considered a leader for Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and Intel. The Ryzen 8000G series was introduced by AMD in January. The release was targeted towards the heavy workloads the come along with AI- based tasks.
