“On June 30, 2023, Amazon will halt production of its Kindle e-bookstore in China,” the multinational technology company made a statement on Thursday on WeChat (a Chinese social media platform) they would quit selling it to local stores in order to reshape its operations.
This means that users cannot purchase fresh e-books, but the ones that have already been bought can still be installed and read until June 2024. It stated that it would give the money back to all the Chinese customers who have purchased a Kindle in the year 2022.
Amazon took such a decision as international tech firms have withdrawn or reduced their operations in China as a rigidly enforced data privacy law is regulating how companies must collect and store information goes into effect. Airbnb, Yahoo, and Microsoft’s LinkedIn, which shut down its Chinese counterpart last year, are among the companies that have taken such moves. The international Amazon firm announced that it will no longer sell Kindle e-readers to other sellers, however some are still available for purchase on Amazon’s JD.com site.
But “Amazon’s long-term development commitment in China will not change,” Amazon said in the Weibo post. “We have established an extensive business base in China and will continue to innovate and invest.” “As a global company, Amazon is committed to providing customers with valuable products and services through innovation. Simultaneously, we continue to adjust the strategic focus of our own business and make efforts in the areas that customers require,” the firm said in another article posted on its official Weibo account.
The e-commerce tech giant then highlighted its international efforts in China, along with its cloud-based software and processes. Amazon also stated that it comprises 10,000 workers, with China’s Corporate headquarter in Beijing and other offices across cities including Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Shenzhen.
