The Indian government’s Press Information Bureau (PIB) has warned State Bank of India (SBI) clients not to reply to false SMS notifications requesting personal and financial information in order to access their accounts.
SBI fraudsters regularly send a false SMS warning saying that your account has been banned and encouraging you to submit your financial and personal details at the URL mentioned in the SMS. After opening the link, you will be transported to a fake SBI website and become a phishing victim.
“A statement in circulation suggesting that your @TheOfficialSBI account has been disabled is #FAKE,” according to a PIB tweet.” “Do not react to emails/SMS requesting for your personal or financial data,” PIB stated in a recent Tweet in response to similar fraudulent activities. If you receive such a communication, please report it to report.phishing@sbi.co.in right away.”
Customers should be aware that SBI or any other bank would never ask them to update or complete their KYC by clicking on links embedded in an SMS, thus they should be cautious before clicking on a link that asks them to update their KYC or supply account information in order to access their account. In an effort to prevent ongoing bank scams through SMS, SBI warned its clients via a tweet last month that “Such SMS might lead to fraud, and you can lose your funds.” Clicking on embedded links is not recommended. Look for the right SBI short code when you receive an SMS. Continue to be alert and #SafeWithSBI.”
“SBI never sends email for client information,” according to the SBI website and the only source that can be trusted. If you receive an e-mail purporting to be from SBI asking for your Username, Password, or other personal information, please report it immediately. This might be a phishing message.”
