WhatsApp is testing message reactions

WhatsApp for Android may be testing a new gesture feature that will allow users to respond to messages faster. The feature is aimed at allowing users to react quickly to messages with a simple double tap, and may show a standard emoji. This builds on the introduction of a previously reported in-development feature that will allow users to quickly respond to received media such as photos and videos from the media viewer screen itself.

According to WhatsApp beta tracker WABetaInfo, the quick response to messages feature has been spotted in the WhatsApp for Android beta app version 2.24.16.7. Once rolled out, users may be able to quickly respond to messages by double tapping them.

The feature tracker suggests that a default “heart emoji” will be displayed when responding to messages, similar to the features of apps on other meta platforms such as Instagram and Facebook. This is speculated to allow for faster responses to messages. Instead of long-pressing a message to select the heart emoji, users can simply double-tap to achieve the same goal.

The feature tracker claims that the double-tap reply option to messages is still in development and therefore only available to beta testers. Therefore, it may only be accessible to those who own the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android through the Google Play beta program.
