Google makes it easier for users to sign up for its Advanced Protection Program.

This program is designed for users who are at “high risk”, such as journalists and those involved in political campaigns.

The latest update allows users to set up one passkey that uses the biometric authentication built into a Pixel or iPhone.

A passkey is a method of authentication that replaces passwords with the built-in authentication on a device.

Passkey Protection is available for Google Accounts since 2023. However, older versions required two physical security keys in order to protect sensitive accounts. The server would store one key, and the authentication device would hold the other. Accounts could be accessed by using one of the passkeys and a password.

users now have the option to create a passkey that will authenticate their accounts without needing to enter passwords. The passkey uses the device’s biometrics in order to authenticate users.

Apple and Google password vaults along with several password manager now offer passkeys for authenticating users. To use a passkey users will need updated software and compatible hardware that supports biometric authentication.

Click the “Get Started” button. You will be guided through the entire setup process.

In the event that you lose access to your account, users will need to create recovery methods. These include a phone number and a second email address or passkey.
