WABETAINFO reports that WhatsApp is working to tweak the interface of the call screen. The beta update version 2.24.7.19 introduces a brand new interface, which is designed to improve user navigation during calls.

This fix addresses an issue that users often have, where they mistakenly believe the back button ends the call. This new interface is now available to some beta testers. It updates the call bar, and enlarges your profile picture.
The previous updates were focused on redesigning top of screen and adding semi-transparent backgrounds to improve button visibility.
WhatsApp’s efforts to improve the calling interface are a reflection of its commitment to delivering a modern and intuitive user experience.
The new bottom call bar interface will gradually be rolled out to more beta test users and may eventually make its way into the stable version of app.
