International Data Corporation (IDC) said that in Q1 2024, India delivered 34 million smartphones, representing an 11.5% year-over-year gain. It was the third quarter in a row that shipments increased. The average selling price (ASP) of smartphones was unchanged at $263 (₹21,960).
Vivo ranked first among brands with 16.2%, followed by Xiaomi (12.8%) and Samsung (15.6%). Of the ten brands in the top 10, Motorola had the greatest growth rate (4.6%).
Realme came in fifth place with 9.8%, while Oppo had 10.2% of the market. With a 7.3% market share in Q1 2024, Apple ranked sixth.
The entry level (sub-$100) market saw a 14% year-over-year fall in share to 15%, from 20% last year, according to the research. In this market, Xiaomi is the leader, followed by Poco and Itel.
The entry-premium ($200<$400) segment’s share increased from 20% to 23% year over year. Almost 30% of this market was made up of Oppo and Realme.
The mid-premium ($400<$600) market saw a 46% unit fall to a 3% share, from 6% the previous year. Primarily, OnePlus has a 38% market share, trailed by Vivo and Oppo.
With a 21% unit loss, the premium segment ($600<$800) held a 2% share. Apple’s share fell year over year to 45%, while Samsung came in second place with a 44% share, up from 16% the previous year.
The most significant gain was seen in the super-premium ($800+) market, which saw a 44% increase in share from 7% to 9%.
With a combined share of 64% of shipments, the iPhone 14/15/14 Plus/15 Plus was followed by the Galaxy S24/S24 Ultra/S23/S24+ with a 25% share. With a 69% market share overall, Apple lead the category, followed by Samsung with 31%.
During the quarter, 23 million 5G cellphones were shipped. While 5G smartphone ASPs fell to $337 in 1Q24, a 21% year-over-year fall, the share of 5G smartphone shipments grew to 69%, up from 46% in 1Q23.
Shipments of the mass budget ($100<200) sector increased threefold within 5G to capture 46% of the market.
Apple saw record-breaking first-quarter shipments, jumping by 19% year over year, with an ASP of $953. For Apple, the iPhone 14/15 accounted for 56% of shipments.
