Microsoft unveils Proteus for people with disabilities

Microsoft has introduced a new customisable XBox controller named ‘Proteus’ for gamers with physical disabilities. This XBox controller features several small cubes which can be arranged in the way you want.

Microsoft has introduced a new customizable XBox controller for gamers with physical disabilities. Proteus is developed by ByoWave as part of the Designed for Xbox program, Proteus is a wireless video game controller kit and has parts that feature ‘Snape And Play’. This can be easily connected to build more than 100 million configurations and LED lighting variations.

Design of Proteus, The Wireless Xbox Controller

The wireless XBox controller is designed to be used with one hand and has several small cubes that contain buttons, a directional pad and analogue sticks. According to Microsoft gamers will be able to use the companion app to remap these buttons for a personalized experience. Proteus will also come with a Bluetooth dongle, USB C charging cable, two large one button peripherals and left and right handles.

The Xbox controller will be compatible with XBox series X/S, Xbox One, Windows 10 and Windows 11. However it will not work with other gaming consoles such as the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5. Currently it is not available for pre- order on the ByoWave website for $255 price right now; but it will be available for purchase later this year for $299, which roughly translates to Rs 25,000.

Microsoft has also made certain announcements with respect to the existing Xbox Adaptive Controller. This was launched in 2018 to allow players to build an adaptive setup. According to Microsoft the upcoming software update will come with more accessories such as a USB port supporting up to 12 patterns, a hat switch and a second switch.
