Bengaluru, the bustling tech hub of India, is taking a significant step toward smarter traffic management. The city has commenced testing an innovative adaptive traffic signaling system based on Japanese technology known as “MODERATO.” This cutting-edge system aims to alleviate traffic congestion by dynamically adjusting traffic signals in real-time, responding to the ever-changing demands of the road.
The MODERATO system is currently undergoing testing at key junctions in the city, including Kensington Road and Murphy Road. Once these initial tests are successful, the system will be rolled out across 28 major junctions in Bengaluru, with full-scale implementation expected by March 2024.
Unlike traditional traffic signals with fixed timers, MODERATO relies on real-time data from sensors to adapt to traffic conditions on the fly. This means that signal timings will adjust automatically based on the density of vehicles, leading to smoother traffic flow and reduced congestion.
The system comprises signals for both motorists and pedestrians, along with automatic traffic counters and queue-length measurement systems. Powered by sophisticated central control software, MODERATO optimizes signal timings in real-time to ensure efficient traffic management.
Funded by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and implemented by Nagoya Electric Works Company Limited, this Rs 72-crore project aims to enhance traffic efficiency and reduce congestion in Bengaluru’s core areas.
By reducing delays and queuing at covered junctions by up to 30 percent, MODERATO promises to significantly improve travel times and overall traffic flow in Bengaluru. This is especially crucial for a city that ranked among the world’s most congested cities in 2023.
