DoorDash is introducing a new security measure in the app designed to ensure that alcohol is only served to those over 21. The new measure requires the company’s couriers to scan a customer’s ID through the DoorDash app to verify their identity. and stopping the distribution of alcohol. Instead of providing an ID to the courier, customers must scan their ID. The new security measure is in addition to the pre-order ID verification feature in the company’s existing app. DoorDash says the improved two-factor authentication builds on its efforts to ensure the secure purchase and delivery of alcohol.

Once the driver confirms the customer’s identity and checks for signs of intoxication, the delivery can be completed. DoorDash says it will remind customers to be at the door with a valid ID during delivery.“As a reminder, Dashers screen for general signs of intoxication before completing any alcohol delivery,” a DoorDash spokesperson told TechCrunch in an email. “If the catcher believes that the customer is drunk, they are instructed not to complete the delivery and dispose of the alcohol responsibly or return it to the seller. To help wine lovers, we have created practical and useful guidelines for wine distribution. Drivers must receive alcohol testing or safety training as required by that jurisdiction.

The improved two-step verification was first tested in Dallas, Detroit, Miami, Phoenix, Portland, Oregon, Seattle and Northern Virginia. Two-factor authentication is now implemented throughout the United States. DoorDash launched alcohol delivery last year and says it’s seeing strong demand from consumers and retailers. The company estimates that adding alcohol can increase the average cost of a customer’s order by up to 30% in restaurants and grocery stores, and by more than 50% in convenience stores. In the fourth quarter of 2021, DoorDash couriers earned about 30 per cent more than alcohol-free deliveries, the company said.DoorDash offers an opt-in option that prevents customers from ordering alcohol and direct marketing and communications related to alcohol delivery. “With today’s announcement of two-step or two-step authentication, we are setting a new industry standard for responsible alcohol delivery,” DoorDash general manager of alcohol Eric Ragot said in a statement. “New safety measures will help ensure people over 21 get alcohol.
