LG Electronics announced that it will use its robotic technology to enter the fast-growing logistics business as part of its aspirations to become a provider of automated logistics solutions. The IT giant announced that it will collaborate with CJ Logistics, a prominent package delivery company, to develop integrated robotic solutions for parcel sorting and picking.
The two businesses will design optimum robot operating methods for each logistics hub, build order picking systems based on self-driving robots to discover and classify products, and implement robot solutions to CJ Logistics facilities under the terms of the agreement.
According to the Yonhap news agency, LG said it will equip CJ Logistics with its CLOi CarryBot robot and other solutions to be utilised in a large distribution centre in Gonjiam, south of Seoul, as early as next month.
According to LG, the ‘CLOi CarryBot’ is the company’s next-generation robot, which has progressed from an automated guided vehicle to an autonomous mobile robot based on artificial intelligence. LG claims that CJ’s massive network system, as well as its wealth of data and industry knowledge, will benefit the two companies in developing ideal solutions. The number of distribution centres owned by CJ is the most in South Korea.
LG Electronics has been investing in robotic technology as one of its main future growth industries for years, and its robotic solutions have been used in hotels, hospitals, and restaurants.
In March, the company announced that it would collaborate with roboticist Dennis Hong, the founding director of Robotics & Mechanisms Laboratory at the University of California, Los Angeles to develop advanced and integrated robotic solutions for the logistics sector “that can manage every step of the order delivery process — from the warehouse to the customer’s front door.”
Last month, LG Electronics completed the verification of the CLOi CarryBot and conducted a proof of concept (POC) test operation at a big logistics hub. The global market for logistics and delivery robots is currently booming. According to the Fuji Research Institute in Japan, the linked market would be worth 11.5 trillion won by 2025.
