Samsung Screen will completely shut LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) production at the end of this month. That is six months ahead of the day that was originally planned. According to industry insiders, the competition was too fierce, and Samsung Group wanted to cut its losses.

Samsung Display, a division of Samsung Electronics, will use higher-end QD quantum dot panels. Post the production halt, any LCD panel needs will be procured.

Korean media reveals Samsung’s plan to end LCD production

According to the Korean media, Samsung Display has decided to discontinue LCD production. The reason is competitiveness in the market due to the cheaper products manufactured by its Chinese counterparts. However, no details regarding the company’s investment strategy is released yet.

The Display Supply Chain Consultants, a US market research firm has made another claim. The average price rank of LCD panels, evaluated against 100 in Jan 2014, might fall to 36.6 in Sept. 2022. The figure has fallen further from a record level of 41.5 in April 2022 and is lower than the high record of 87 in June 2021.

Samsung’s decision to extend production was determined by market conditions. It had stated in late October that a “short-term” extension was being considered. For the unversed, OLED panels have started to become the norm in the smartphone market. Therefore, the company has decided to focus on producing organic light-emitting diode (OLED) and quantum dot (QD) displays.
